Select the background area you want to remove, then select the eraser tool in the second option of the eraser palette. You need to click on the selection area and drag each corner. You have to keep erasing the background all over the background. The image will look like the background of the screenshot.

Finally, you can save the file as a transparent background for future use on a different background color.
